Following on from successful lighting projects at Hoo and Strood leisure centres in Medway in 2015, NCS Technology and, UK lighting manufacturer, Earlsmann, successfully bid for the contract to undertake a major LED lighting upgrade at Medway Park.
Medway Park is a regional centre of sporting excellence which stages national and international events as well as catering for more than 2,000 customers per day.
The project included replacing the lighting in the swimming and diving pools, and the spectators’ gallery, as well as the sports hall and squash courts. The lighting schemes, managed and overseen by Medway Council’s Strategic Property team, are part of the Council’s wider programme of energy saving initiatives, working in collaboration with local SMEs like NCS.
Light levels to the pool space were measured prior to the project at around 50-100 lux. The existing lights were situated directly above the pools, creating glare and shining into swimmers’ eyes.
Through the site visit and RELUX modelling, 300W Gigaterra MAHA asymmetric flood lights were selected to provide good uniform illumination. The lights were placed at the pool sides, meaning users would not be looking directly into them. NCS engineers also angled the lighting to avoid reflections, ensuring lifeguards could see clearly.
The brighter light levels offered by this LED solution meant that the number of light fittings was reduced. Polycarbonate covers were used to conceal the fittings that were no longer used in the ceiling above the pool – a neat solution that minimised remedial costs.
For the spectators’ gallery, Earlsmann designed and manufactured new LED gear trays that could be placed within existing fittings.
Medway Park now has bright, clear lighting in their pool facilities, creating an environment that is welcoming for swimmers.
The new LED solution provides light levels over 300 lux, which meets CIBSE and Sport England guidelines for pools, and provides safer conditions for divers who can now accurately ‘spot’ the water.
LED lighting investment rewarded with quick payback
For this lighting upgrade Medway Park took advantage of Salix funding, an interest free loan that enables public sector organisations to install energy efficient projects. This particular LED lighting upgrade provides impressive immediate savings of up to 75% through reduced energy use and maintenance costs – covering the investment within two years.
Earlsmann and NCS Technology – providing a ‘one-stop-shop’ for LED lighting
The lighting upgrade at Medway Park was a seamless process that minimised disruption to pool users. Both companies are well-versed in lighting guidelines, and have experience of designing lighting schemes across a wide range of facilities, including leisure centres, offices, car parks and warehouses.
